Once Upon a Time...

**This Memory is dedicated to my sister, Casey...good times...**

In a land far, far away ( read: about 10 miles outside of Twin Falls) there was a little farm with a humble, little shack house upon it. Inside this house lived a meek, little family. In that family were four ordinary kids, two of which were about to create an extra ordinary memory.

Being that it was summer, the kids were out of school and faced with the challenge of finding ways to fill their hours. Many days were spent outside in countless adventures and imaginary journeys.

Today was different, however, for the two girls in the family could not come up with any adventures and could not imagine any journeys. They both sat slumped, one leg flung over the arm of the couch. Frizzy hair, mismatched outfits, lopsided frowns. To say they were bored was an understatement.

The mom, tired of the whining coming from the two girls, shooed them out of the living room. So, the frizzy, yellow-haired older sister and her slinky, red-headed younger sister shuffled to the front door. To get to the door they had to pass by the wood burning stove. Upon the wood burning stove sat a box of matches that the eldest of the sisters covertly pocketed before closing the front door behind her.

Outside the summer sun would have been all too much to handle if the strong breeze they felt whip up their hair around their freckled faces had not been present. They wandered and roamed around the farm. They visited the pigs that the red-head kept for 4-H and found that pigs are utterly uninteresting in the heat of the day as well. Straddling the top fence post of the corral, the sisters swung their legs back and forth as they randomly rambled about random ramblings. The tall, dry grasses and weeds were on one side of the fence, the smelly, grunting pigs on the other.

Then the yellow-haired girl sat up straight and smirked as she remembered what was in her pocket. She had remembered watching her older, obviously smarter brother lighting matches the other day, throwing them to the ground, and then stomping them out. She had watched on in admiration at such a fun past time and had sulked when her brother told her that she could not participate.

Now it was her turn.

The girls hopped down into the grassy pasture and took their stances for the first match. They knew that you had to stomp hard and fast as soon as the match hit the ground. Strrriiiike...flame...throw...stomp....strike...flame...throw stomp...they continued this pattern at a steady pace through about 20 matches. Then the older, obviously smarter sister made the now infamous decision of telling her younger sister not to stomp the next time and to let the flame get just a little bigger before extinguishing it. Strrriiiiike, flame, throw.....gust of the summer wind....shrieks of fear....furious stomping...stomping...screaming...stomping...Older sister thinks of swearing but remembers she has to be a good example to younger sister...furious stomping...screaming...then just watching. Watching as the fire caught new life and grasped to everything within its reach. Watching as a lump bigger than a softball rose in their throats and terror took up place in the pits of their stomach.

The older sister knew they had to think quick. She ran to the water hose and fiercely stretched it towards the hungry flames....running as fast as she could she is jerked backwards through the air onto her butt and cries out in frustration because the hose has reached as far as it can go. Not far enough.

Thoughts of a crazed father ringing her neck, a mother exploding in anger and the understanding that parents can be totally unreasonable at times like this, forces the girl to make the only decision she can...NOT to tell her parents. Instead, they worked wholeheartedly at fire fighting by going into the house and filling up beverage glasses full of water and then running them the 20 yards to splash on the fire. The fire roared on getting bigger with every second passing. Like a few droplets of water was enough to put out its rampage.

The mother, whose attention was caught by the constant parading of water glasses to and fro and the four shoes covered in soot, demanded to know what the girls were up to. The older sister was ready to delve into a full blown fairy tale when the little, red-headed girl immediately burst into uncontrollable sobs blowing their chance at not getting in trouble, the ultimate objective here.

It must have been a Saturday because the dad was nearby listening to this and immediately burst out the door, dragging the older brother behind him. When they reached the fire it was just inches away from taking over a very large shop full of odds and ends and oh say 50,000 dollars worth of farm equipment. The pigs were also in mortal danger and were worried of becoming bacon all to soon.

Luckily, a big, strong dad and big, strong brother can do almost anything when they really need to. Equipped with shovels they work fast and efficiently. After an hour or so, they had been able to smother out the fire before it was able to do any major damage. It really was a miracle and little, fervent prayers were being heard for that fire to be put out as easily as it was.

The funny thing is the girls cannot remember if and how much trouble they were in. However, they were constantly reminded of their mistake by having to wear their soot covered shoes to school.

To this day, some 14 years later, the family still talks about this memory in their late night chats as they sit all gathered and cozy in their parent's living room.

Ironically, the girls may or may not have had a poster (given to them at a fire prevention assembly at school) of Smoky the Bear taped on their bedroom wall. The older girl claims to have felt a little bit lied to after assuming for all these years that she only had prevention powers when it came to the forest. Maybe she needs to write him and tell him that his warning is incomplete and should read something like this: "Only you can prevent forest, pasture, lawn, house, corral, shop, pig fires." or maybe not.

The End.

Wedding Bells

Katie Mae and Dustin
Engaged! Congrats You Two!!

I stole this picture from Kristin. I wish digital cameras existed when Katie and I were growing up...now I need to track down photos and scan them all in...such a process!! I am so excited for Katie and I am a bit jealous because I wish I was getting married all over again! It was the most beautiful and best day of my life and so much fun!! I can only hope it is that much and more for Katie!

Sorry to get all sentimental but Katie has been one of the most important people in my life and has always been and continues to be an example to me! Katie and I met when we were 6 years old and were best friends ever since! Our parents made sure we got in the same grade school class for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, until I moved to a new school...then we reunited in Junior High and went on to be roommates our first year of college at BYU-I. She was seriously the BEST roommate a girl could ask for. As far as I can remember we got along perfectly and I don't ever remember a scuffle...Katie did we ever scuffle? All 5 of my roommates were amazing...but it was nice to go into our room and shut the door at times to just get away. Katie and I coexist very well!! (writing all this I hope Katie feels the same way...it would be funny if she has a totally different impression of me and felt as if she was just tolerating me!..ha! sad!)

Katie was always the "good" half. I was the "naughty" half. I always wanted to do risky things and go against the rules. I still remember when we were in 3rd grade and we were standing outside of the school waiting for the bell to ring so that we could go inside. We were not allowed into the building before the bell. Well it was freezing and I tried and tried to get Katie to come into the building with me. But Katie always stuck to the rules and would have rather frozen outside then break the rules. Even something so simple she still had integrity and at such a young age. She has always been an example to me in that way.

I have memories upon memories with Katie. I lived days at a time with her whenever our parents would allow. We had many adventures in the back yard and walking up the lane, playing on the same softball team from the very first season all the way until they no longer had an age group for us, going to the cemetery every memorial day and taking care of the graves that seemed to have been forgotten or all alone, playing Nintendo all through the night and having sore thumbs after, Little Caesar's Pizza, Bean Burritos, Making home videos and laughing our heads off watching them, dressing Kristin up and doing her hair, making Barbie clothes, dressing up like weirdos and wandering around the mall drawing attention to ourselves, girls camp, seeing each other every Sunday at church, playing gymnastics on the picnic table benches and camping out on the trampoline, riding horses, running into the mailbox while tubing, working on the farm, trying to escape my crazy aunt tracking me down to work on the farm, having a yard sale, riding bikes and meeting each other half-way, jumping off the stairs and landing on piles of pillows, sliding down the stairs in sleeping bags, school dances, church dances for that matter and midnight fast food runs courtesy of Alvin, spilling a whole gallon of milk all over the kitchen floor...they say it is my fault...I think it is their fault;) riding to school in the morning, Alvin making toast and hot chocolate and no one eating it but me, playing baby dolls and cars, ice skating in Sun Valley and on the homemade rink, playing basketball, going to volleyball camp together, getting married at a carnival, people thinking we were twins, going to the fair every year and working in the chicken booth, and on and on and on...I could go on all night.

Some of my very most treasured memories were made with Katie...and Kristin...and Ann....they were my second family and always will be!! I love you all more than I could ever say. The love and experiences you gave me are priceless...

I am thankful for you each and every day.

Katie, here are my wishes for you. That your wedding will be everything you hope it to be. That you will experience pure joy and companionship as you set out on this new journey in your life. That will know how much purpose you have in this life and that you have touched so many lives along the way. You matter more than you will ever know!

Thanks so much for always being there for me...no matter what.

I Have Stories!

Today's Journal...Write 5 Memories from your Pre-Marital Life that Pops Into Your Head Randomly.

This one always pops into my mind. One day Julie and I decided we wanted to have an adventure. We were seniors in high school(seniors right Ju?) So, we asked Mr. Miller(our drama teacher) if we could use the auditorium to watch movies on the big projector after Sweetheart Ball. I remember it was Sweetheart Ball because Casey Tindall was my date and Julie asked Brad Rasmussen(otherwise I would have been confused of what dance...and yes..this also means we were seniors...see how I use my noggin!) Mr. Miller said that would be okay and handed us over the keys. wow...really? It was that easy? This was on a Thursday and the wheels in our heads began turning...a dangerous pastime...I know! The big adventure we decided on was that we were going to stay the night in the auditorium and stay up watching movies on the movie theater sized screen and just have a party. We tried recruiting Carrie...her mom didn't go for it. We were naughty because our mothers thought we were at each other's houses....oh wait I think my mom knew but Julie's mom thought she was at my house(Mom..did you know about this?)....hahaha...I will never trust my kids because of us!

Anyways...we get a bunch of blankets and pillows and movies and get to the auditorium. We played music really loud, watch movies, climbed around the cat walks...and I don't know what else!...but after this the story is no longer cool. We got scared of course. We are in a huge auditorium that creaks and moans and has stories told about it having a ghost and we begin to freak ourselves out. However, we are determined to make it through the night. We have limited resources to call to our aid because we don't want anyone to know we are staying there because we would have been in big trouble...so we decide on calling Lance...we try to talk him into bringing lots of junk food...he did show up ...I think without food...boo. And then I think we all fell asleep ...Julie is that how this goes? See...I didn't write it down soon enough...but I am sure you have it written down somewhere right? But didn't we wake up and go to school the next morning?

I do remember being in Drama class and the guy hired to take care of the auditorium...Dave? Came in and told Mr. Miller there was a bunch of blankets and pillows in the auditorium and it looked like someone had slept there...we quickly covered by saying we put all that there just to have it ready for the dance...and I remember us looking at each other and being slightly worried at getting caught...but we were smooth. Hahahahaha....this is as rebellious and daring as we got!

One day in elementary school...I was attending Lincoln in Twin Falls at the time...we had an assembly where a man came and taught us how to act out miming. I was thrilled when he picked me out of the audience to come on stage! I was supposed to walk across the stage and pretend to slip on an invisible banana peel...and mime out what that might look like. Well...I did as I was told and as I pretended to slip I was acting so well that I actually fell...flat on my butt...on stage...I can't remember exactly what grade this was...but I think it was either 3rd, 4th, or 5th...and I was SO EMBARRASSED! I guess more than I thought because I have kept that memory with me as I have forgotten others.

I have so many memories from 9th grade...most of them have Julie in them...that is the time when we started to get more freedom and hanging out more with boys and all that teenager stuff. Well...we started hanging out with 2 boys who were best friends and it was so much fun and even thrilling because they were older and in high school already...and for a junior high girl that is a big, freaking deal! It ended up that Julie began "going out" with Curt Jones and I was with Ryan Bevan (who just recently got married...Congrats!) We couldn't actually go out with these boys because we weren't old enough yet...but we found ways to get around that...like just happening to meet up at the movies...I think we went to Titanic like 6 times!...they would park down at Robert Stuart Jr. high's parking lot and Julie and I wold just happen to take a stroll down the block and find them there, and we would meet at CSI basketball games (I think it is so funny that it became so popular to hang out at college b-ball games. Meanwhile we were all involved with the play "The Music Man"...which I can't ever explain how much that changed my life(that is a big story in itself)...but it was exciting and fun and yes we felt a little rebellious which just made it that more invigorating. I don't remember how long this went on...only a few months...we all broke up and there was some silly drama and I later threw a bag of candy at Curt's head which was really rude and made Ryan miss a scene in the play...oh the drama...the drama! But it was fun...oh yeah and I have to remember Sod Busters(Or was it Idaho Joe's by then?)....that is mainly where it all started...The Hovering! ha! love it!

I had a T-Shirt once that said "Softball is Life: The Rest is Just Details" You know those shirts...everyone had one that said something or the other. Well...that shirt really did sum up about 7 summers of my life. I LOVED playing softball!!! Everyone says it is just a game...and everyone is wrong! Once our team got it's first taste of victory we were in it to win every time!! I think we won the championships all but 2 years! I played 2nd base and I owned it! Nobody took my spot unless I needed a break! My mom coached the team and Ann Allen(my 2nd mother) was the assistant coach. Yes, some of the girls didn't think it was fair and many murmured against me saying I only got to play 2nd because my mom coached...well...that is one of the perks of having a mother take many hours out of many summers to coach a bunch of little sniffling girls! So too bad! Boy did we all have attitude but it was so much fun and we rocked the field. For the most part we were known as Intermountain Heating and Air Conditioning. Stefanie Ernst's dad sponsored us and was at most games. He was a great sponsor and fan! Here is how things played out for the most part(sorry this is minutiae but I want to remember...Katie Allen or Amanda Buhler played 1st base--Laura 2nd base--Stefanie 3rd base--Melanie Dennis and Amanda Buhler were our pitchers for the most part--Tessa Fuller was an Awesome catcher! then the outfield switched around some as different players came and went. We had Lynn VonBerndt and Lynsey Nutting,Kristal Eastman, Allison Reed, Crystal Nipper,Jamie Schellhouse(sp?sorry) , Jenny Guzman, Christin Borg, Stephanie Slane, Alli and Lacie Hillman, Kari Eisenhauer, Cassandra Johnson, Mirona C, Lindsay Bell, --oh darn..I shouldn't have tried to name everyone...I will have to find my team pictures and post them if I can get my hands on them! Anyways...some of the best times of my life and even though my mom was a softball nazi sometimes and we clashed heads and embarrassed each other...I am so glad she was my coach and we have those memories to share together!

Katie and I met the summer before entering 2nd grade. We have been together ever since! I spent many, many, many, MANY days and nights at her house. The Allen's really are my 2nd family.(I always thought for a while I was going to marry Tim....haha...he married another Laura though:) One memory I love is that Katie and I really got addicted to a Super Nintendo game called "Top Gear"...we stayed down in her basement and played it a full evening and night straight....clear until it was morning outside! I remember my thumb turning numb...but we just had to keep going and try and beat the game...we never did beat it:(...but that was so much fun. We always had Little Caesar's pizza and bean burritos, and Shasta Pop, and Doritoes...that was our staple over the weekends and it seriously couldn't have gotten any better....until these many years later when all the calories and carbs caught up with me....hhhhmmmm....somehow Katie and Kristin came out untouched....not fair! Love that family....love that I have so many memories with them....I will definitely be posting more later! I have to get this stuff all down before I forget it all!!....Won't it be fun when we get back to Heaven(or if) and we get to watch our life video...oh how fun! Do they have popcorn in Heaven?

Now I want everyone else to do the same thing and post 5 random memories that pop into your head! Go! Now! I want to read about you!
